ANXIETY
Anxiety is a generalized mood condition that can often occur without an identifiable triggering stimulus. As such, it is distinguished from fear, which is an emotional response to a perceived threat. Additionally, fear is related to the specific behaviors of escaped and avoidance, whereas anxiety is related to situations perceived as uncontrollable or unavoidable. Anxiety is generally a future-oriented mood state in which one is ready or prepared to attempt to cope with upcoming negative events, suggesting that it is a distinction between future vs. present dangers which divides anxiety and fear.
Physical effects of anxiety may include heart palpitations, muscle weakness and tension, fatigue, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches or headaches The body prepares to deal with a threat: blood pressure and heart rate are increased, sweating is increased, blood flow to the major muscle groups is increased, and immune & digestive system functions are inhibited (the flight or fright response). External signs of anxiety may include pale skin, sweating, trembling, and pupillary dilation. Someone who has anxiety might also experience it as a sense of dread or panic. Although panic attacks are not experienced by every person who has anxiety, they are a common symptom. Panic attacks usually come without warning, and although the fear is generally irrational, the perception of danger is very real. A person experiencing a panic attack will often feel as if he or she is about to die or pass out.
Emotional effects may include feelings of apprehension or dread, trouble concentrating, feeling tense or jumpy, anticipating the worst, irritability, restlessness, watching (and waiting) for signs (and occurrences) of danger, and, feeling like your mind's gone blank as well as nightmares/bad dreams, obsessions about sensations, deja vu, trapped in your mind feeling, and feeling like everything is scary.
Cognitive effects of anxiety may include thoughts about suspected dangers, such as fear of dying. You may...fear that chest pains [a physical symptom of anxiety] are a deadly heart attack or that the shooting pains in your head [another physical symptom of anxiety] are the result of a tumor or aneurysm. You feel an intense fear when you think of dying, or you may think of it more often than normal, or can’t get it out of your mind.
Behavioral effects may include withdrawal from situations where unpleasant effects of anxiety have been experienced in the past. It can also be affected in ways which include changes in sleeping patterns, nail biting and increased motor tension, such as foot tapping.
TESTAMONIAL Stress, Anxiety & Insecurity
I have currently had two sessions with Moira, both I found very helpful and highly relaxing. Prior to the first session I was a bit nervous as I was not sure what to expect, but once we got started with the session I felt very relaxed and my body, light. The second session was very different but also similar to the first as we were working on something entirely different. It felt like I had almost left my body and been lifted away. A big thank you to Moira for helping me learn how to relax and feel secure!
PHOBIAS
A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder usually defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation in which the sufferer commits to great lengths in avoiding, typically disproportional to the actual danger posed, often being recognized as irrational. In the event the phobia cannot be avoided entirely the sufferer will endure the situation or object with marked distress and significant interference in social or occupational activities. The sufferer usually has a profound believe that they may die, this is very real for them and will cause them to avoid the phobic situation at all costs.
TESTAMONIAL Needle Phobia
Before I had hypnotherapy with Moira there was a couple of events in my life that led me to fear and hate needles (injections and blood tests). Doctor's had to hold my arm still while nurses took blood. I would shake so much on the pre-op bed that all my patient notes would fall off the bed! I laughed when the nurse told me to relax and think that I'm on the beach! Blacking out before and after operations on the bed was not an uncommon experience for me. Needless to say it was quite embarrassing for a middle aged male to be acting this way, yet I had no control over my behaviour. Before my next surgery my wife advised me to see Moira for some sessions in hypnotherapy. I was skeptical at first. As my surgery approached I was so relaxed! I gave my arm to the anaethetist, I did not try to pull it back! The canular was put in at least 20 minutes before surgery. I couldn't believe the result! I didn't shake one bit. In fact I was enjoying conversations with nursing staff. Together with the strategies and hypnotherapy that Moira gave me I no longer experienced the shaking, the black outs and the fear that I was so accustomed to. Thanks Moira!
TESTAMONIAL Agrophobia/Anxiety/Alcohol
MY EXPERIENCE WITH MOIRA, AT FOCUS YOUR MIND.
It began during a meeting of artists, asked to briefly share something for which they were grateful. One shared that she had been able to give up smoking after a visit to a Hypnotherapist. I was in a bad place with anxiety, agoraphobia and pouring alcohol on top of that. I rang the artist and asked about it. She helped me to find Moira. I took the huge step of picking up the phone. And so the journey started. With trepidation I drove up the driveway, entered the warm sanctuary of Moira’s home and began talking. A lifetime of angst was uncovered simply and succinctly by Moira’s well-honed intuition. I climbed into the chair and tried to focus on Moira’s voice as she encouraged me to relax, which, eventually I did. We did a visualization that I found profound, deep and pertinent to my needs. I found that when I went home, instead of forcing myself to practise, I looked forward to it, and began visiting old scenarios where I had not been given a voice, or a choice, and visualized a new outcome. It didn’t change the past, but, for the first time, it healed it. The butterflies of dread each morning, became the fluttering of joy. Each week, a different visualization, each one relevant to a part of me that needed healing.
Thank you Moira, what a beautiful teacher you are.
DEPRESSION
Depression is more than just a low mood - it's a serious illness. While we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time and often without reason. People with depression find it hard to function every day and may be reluctant to participate in activities they once enjoyed. Depression is one of the most common of all mental health problems. One in five people experience depression at some stage of their lives.
Types of Depression
Different types of depression often have slightly different symptoms and may require different treatments. The five main types of depression are listed below.
-
Major depression - a depressed mood that lasts for at least two weeks. This may also be referred to as clinical depression or unipolar depression.
-
Psychotic depression - a depressed mood which includes symptoms of psychosis. Psychosis involves seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations), feeling everyone is against you (paranoia) and having delusions.
-
Dysthymia - a less severe depressed mood that lasts for years.
-
Mixed depression and anxiety - a combination of symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Bipolar Depression - (formerly known as manic depressive illness) - involves periods of feeling low (depressed) and high (manic).
Common behaviour associated with depression includes:
-
moodiness that is out of character
-
increased irritability and frustration
-
finding it hard to take minor personal criticisms
-
spending less time with friends and family
-
loss of interest in food, sex, exercise or other pleasurable activities
-
being awake throughout the night
-
increased alcohol and drug use
- staying home from work or school
- increased physical health complaints like fatigue or pain
- being reckless or taking unnecessary risks (e.g. driving fast or dangerously)
-
- slowing down of thoughts and actions.
Signs and Symptoms
If you notice any behavioural changes that last for more than two weeks in family members or friends, then it is worth asking if the person may be depressed.
TESTAMONIAL Depression
I have suffered from depression and had a nervous breakdown after some workplace bullying. Seeing Moira has put my life back on track and given me some hope for the future. After each session I feel so relaxed and able to cope with most situations and I feel stronger emotionally. Moira gives me strategies to use at home to help me through the week, which I use and find really helpful. Moira has a wonderful ability to understand and listen to how you are feeling; she makes you feel valued as a person, when you feel as though no one else does. Things look much better now after sessions with Moira, the future is much better. Thank You Moira
GAMBLING
Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value (referred to as "the stakes") on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods. Typically, the outcome of the wager is evident within a short period.
Gambling can have a profound controlling affect on the individual causing a roll-on effect with family and work relationships. The gambler can quite quickly become addicted without insight not realising how addictive gambling can be.
TESTAMONIAL Gambling
My doctor advised me to seek counselling for my worsening gambling and lifestyle problems. I went for help to Moira Knotts. Over 3 periods I found her counselling had a very calming effect on me. We talked in depth about the whys and wherefores of my problems. These conversations made me start to understand myself and why I had started down this gambling lifestyle track. I still have to have more counselling. I found Moira very professional and showed a lot of empathy to my situation; she had a calming effect that made me see there was light at the end of the tunnel, she is down to earth and very supportive
SMOKING
Smoking is a practice in which a substance, most commonly tobacco or cannibis is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled. This is primarily practised for recreational drug use as combustion releases the active substances in the drugs such as nicotine and makes them available for absorption through the lungs. It can also be done as a part of rituals, to induce trances and spiritual enlightenment.
The most common method of smoking today is through cigarettes, primarily industrially manufactured but also hand-rolled from loose tobacco. It has been suggested that smoking-related disease kills one half of all long term smokers
Perception surrounding smoking has varied over time and from one place to another; holy and sinful, sophisticated and vulgar. Today medical studies have proven that smoking tobacco is among the leading causes of many diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, COPD, erectile dysfunction and can also lead to birth defects. The inherent health hazards of smoking have caused many countries to institute high taxes on tobacco products and anti-smoking campaigns are launched every year in an attempt to curb tobacco smoking.
TESTAMONIAL Stop Smoking
I’m an ex-smoker & I love saying it. I loved smoking but for the last ten years I knew I was harming myself. I told myself that one day I would start to hate it & that would help me to stop. The hating never came so I kept smoking. I smoked through the coughing, the wheezing, the sore throats & the premature aging. ( My sister is five years older than me & she has less lines on her face.) Earlier this year I saw a Throat Specialist who said I must stop smoking. I tried, I cut down but then I would have bad days & the old habits would creep back without me even realising. I searched the internet & found “Focus Your Mind”. I called & was told that “ Hypnosis would give my subconscious a platform”.This was it, I knew all the reasons I should stop, they were after all my own personal reasons & no-one knew them better than me. Three & a half months later I say a huge “Thank you”. My family are so proud of me, my friends can’t believe I’ve done it & sometimes either can I.
I won’t say it’s been easy because there have been times when it has been a struggle but I know that the cravings don’t last long & if I don’t have any around to smoke then I can’t. I believe that to be crucial.
So yes, I’m an ex-smoker & I love saying it.
PS I would be happy to speak to anyone over the phone to verify that I’m a real person Moira.
Hope that you are well. :-)
Relationship Counselling
Testamonial Relationships
I recently went through a particularly stressful experience in my life. I was having marital problems, dealing with my son’s medical condition and working in a high powered position at work. I was becoming overwhelmed with everything happening in my life and the stress levels were causing me to have problems with concentrating, eating and sleeping. I recently attended a relaxation therapy session with Moira Knotts which I found to be very beneficial. I felt the benefits immediately and I was able to go home and practice the techniques she had taught me. It allowed me to relax and feel peaceful. It has made me feel stronger and more focused and able to deal with my problems.
